Embracing one's individuality

For years now I have tried to fit in with society and its trends. Mainly because I was picked on at school and at home for being the weird kid [or the weird, fat, ugly kid in their words], I would try to fit in just so I could feel acceptable and wanted.

However, over the years, it suddenly hit me that a society where everyone looked and acted the same would just be so completely and utterly dull and boring.

And this is exactly why we should be embracing everyone's individuality in society!

Who cares if someone like something different to yourself, or wears different clothing or has crazy coloured hair like more for it I say!

I never understood why those people at school didn't accept me for me. Even when I tried to fit in, they didn't. I don't know why and to be honest, I don't care why. However, it did really affect me as a person. I just fell into this shy, unconfident girl who didn't speak up or do things that I wanted to do, out of fear of being judged by my peers.

As a society, we convey how you have to be in a certain clique, to fit in with a group and that is where you belong. You have the popular kids, the geeks, the goths etc etc but why don't we all just drop the flipping façade and just be who we are and not feel like we are getting judged for it.

I know, easier said than done but I honestly am ashamed to live in such a world that individuality is shadowed by popularity and fitting in with all the current trends.

Something that really annoys me is when you see someone obviously getting talked about because they are owning their individuality.

Last year, a guy was wearing a skirt in town and the looks/comments he was getting from people and from the staff in the shop both him and I were in, I was absolutely appalled.
Going up to the counter to pay, the ladies were making remarks and then I guess something just clicked in me and I just said to their faces what's wrong with him wearing a skirt, we live in the 21st Century, people shouldn't be made to feel judged because of their appearance. They can wear what they want and people should just stop making silly remarks because they are wearing something different.
And honestly their faces after I said that to them and then they said sorry to me, like noooooo, I am not the person you should be saying sorry to, that man over there, rocking that skirt, is. I felt so strongly about it and honestly, a few years ago, I would never of done that and say something so I felt really proud that I had.
Also he looked class as well, like I wish I could pull off a skirt with them legs, so I say wear more skirts man!

If I want to wear mismatched prints or a see through top with a bright coloured bra then hell yeah I am going to wear them. If I wanted to dye my hair bright pink [which I actually did in 2012] then I'm gonna do that.
You get the picture, just because it isn't the current trend that people are following, does not mean that you shouldn't do it. Like who are they to tell you how you should dress or act etc.
Step out from the crowd and do what you gotta do for you.

Don't feel afraid to be different!!!

Also, if you cannot handle my weirdness and fangirlness [I am a professional fangirl don't you know] then that is your problem, not mine.
I don't care if you think I am acting like an eleven year old because I still love a tv show that ended in 2012 [I still miss Merlin okayyyy] or cry over the fact the Colin Morgan is too perfect for words or the fact that I obsess over sweet potato fries and salted caramel, like just let me do what I gotta do!

To round this post off, I just kinda wanted to say that world needs a bit of colour and a splash of individuality so don't dull yours to fit in otherwise it'll be a boring place.

And there we have it, never ever dull your colourful, sparkly individuality for no one but embrace it instead!
Until next time

  1. Such a lovely post - everyone should embrace their differences. It would be quite a weird world to live in if we were all the same!
